We celebrated our first Halloween in our new city of Philadelphia last week. Our little girl dressed up as a butterfly and her daycare held a parade. Sleeping infant tigers and dragons were wheeled about in their cribs. It was beyond adorable. While we didn’t trick or treat the way we did as kids, we visited historic Society Hill, where several streets were closed off to traffic and the nearby Three Bears Park playground was overrun with children and parents, both in costume. The decorations were outstanding. We didn’t have to ring any doorbells. The residents of the neighborhood sat outside their homes on stoops or at card tables handing out candy. A mom quietly and urgently alerted me to the side street that had a guy giving out red or white wine to the parents. The weather was around 60 degrees. The neighborhood was beautiful. I felt like I was on a movie set.

I found the recipe for Not Your Childhood Chicken Salad via the New York Times over the summer and have revisited it a few times since. I’m the first to admit a reliance on the grocery store rotisserie chicken. This recipe takes it to another place. Swapping out the typical celery and mayo for miso and sesame seeds, this option is a delight.
